JMTC: Hello Derek! Thank you for agreeing to this interview, my readers have been asking me to look into gold guides for them and we all really appreciate you doing this.
JMTC: Well Derek, the first question I have for you is this: Were you really a gold seller at one point in the game? How much gold could you make per week then and how much can you make now?
Derek: Sadly I have to admit, yes. Early in my World of Warcraft career I worked as a free lance farmer, supplying several gold selling companies. I was an active farmer through about half of the Burning Crusade, when I finally went clean.
Total gold per week is something thats gone through massive shifts with each expansion. During classic World of Warcraft I averaged 4,300 gold per week with a one week high of 9,000g. During The Burning Crusade I averaged 8,400 gold week with a one week high of 18,500g. And during the Wrath of the Lich King thus far Ive been averaging 16,800g a week with a week high of 39,200g.
JMTC: That's impressive, do you focus on farming, the auction house, or the conversion of items through the use of professions? Perhaps you do a little bit of everything?
Derek: When it comes to farming Im definitely of the eclectic mindset. I would estimate my time breakdown for each respective category looks something like this; where each specific gold making methodology directly influences the other 2 sections.

JMTC: How do you teach through your guide? We all know its an ebook, but do you use any video, maps, images, or narrations to help your readers?
Derek: My primary teaching method goes something like this
- Explain fundamentals of strategy in question
- Quick hypothetical example using above fundamentals
- Complete example using a real scenario Ive experienced. This section includes various charts, images, diagrams, maps, and other resources to further reinforce the base fundamentals expressed in step 1.
Im a big believer in the learning by doing mindset. I use examples and scenarios so that my members can learn to think and adapt to their servers economy. It wouldnt be a very good guide if all I did was list a ton of items to farm
I want to explain why I do what I do, how I do it, and how my members can take this information and implement it on their specific servers setting.
JMTC: That's an approach I think most gold guides would never even think about attempting. How long did it take to write the guide?
Derek: My guide has been a labor of love for many years. The initial version of my guide took 3 months to compile my strategies and to conduct research and testing. Since then Ive continued to release new versions of the guide, updating for major content patches and of course all expansions.
Id estimate Ive put 500 writing hours (and infinitely more research hours) into my gold farming systems development.
JMTC: Ive noticed that you frequently update your site at wow.zuggaming.com with new WOTLK content. Have you kept your guide updated as well? If so, did anything change drastically as far as making gold in WOTLK as compared to BC?
As with any expansion you can expect major changes, and this was particularly true for WotLK. There were tons of changes in the expansion, many more than even I anticipated. It took me 6 weeks of research and testing and 2 weeks of writing to complete the WotLK update for my guide.
With the exception of a few brief basics virtually 100% of the guide was updated to reflect the new information in the expansion. I continue to make new updates as needed, releasing a new version for each large content patch.
JMTC: What interests you in the game besides making gold? Have you done any raiding or pvp?
I pretty much do it all. During classic WoW I was a hardcore raider, spending way more time than Id care to admit here as a part of a top 20 US raiding guild. During The Burning Crusade I pulled a complete 180 and went hardcore PvP, taking my 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 teams to as high as top 50 globally on the world arena rankings.
Today I consider myself a much more casual player. Currently Im focused on leading my guild through the 25 man content as a restoration shaman and casually playing arena / battlegrounds with friends.
Im also a full time college student attending Kansas State University.
JMTC: Thats pretty cool stuff, college was the best eight years of my life (JK) so enjoy it man! Those were all the major questions I had, is there anything else youd like to tell my readers regarding your gold guide, perhaps what makes it better than the dozens of other guides online?
Derek: All I can say is thisyou can buy a guide out there that covers some basic information, maybe enlightens you to few farming techniques you werent aware of, and maybe itll work for a few months, but if you want a guide thats going to last the long haul then there isnt a product out there that can compete with my guide.
No other guide author out there maintains the type of presence I do in the game, nor has the dedication and commitment to 100% customer satisfaction. No other guide offers the type of one on one service that each and every one of my member receives. For the majority of life events, there are no dramatic turning points that initiate radical changes. Most things are evolutionary, especially Linux and the whole Free/Open Source software world. Coding and running compu
er systems are just plain old work. A single Eureka! Moment for a programmer means weeks or months or more of hard work. I suppose headlines need drama, but the reality for Linux is progress has been rapid and steady, and dramatic in non-dramatic ways: steady increases in uptake, and steady improvements in performance and features.
2006 was no exception, but there were some significant milestones in acknowledging that yes, Linux and Free Open Source Software (FOSS) do exist, and yes, they are quite suitable, and even superior, for the enterprise. Of course we've known that for years, but getting the world out against the tsunamis of propaganda, misinformation, and Fedora Users and Developers (FUD) hasn't been easy.
The Biggest Event
The Novell-Microsoft deal, as distasteful as it is to a lot of observers, in the crowning seal of Linux approval. The biggest purveyor of anti-Linux and anti-FOSS propaganda, misinformation and FUD made a deal with a Linux vendor. Whatever the merits of the deal itself, this is a gigantic validation of Linux in the enterprise. Microsoft is playing in the FOSS ballpark now, and it doesn't matter how reluctantly, or how much they try to twist the rules and change the game. You can't buy this kind of exposure.
Accelerating Train
Another significant event was Sun converting the Java license to the GPL, adding it to their array of open source server-side applications, including Solaris. Whatever your personal opinion of Java, Sun's java has long been the standard. It can now be legally bundled with Linux, and it should put IBM's and Microsoft's Java implementations out of pasture for good.
Virtualization is all the rage, especially the kind that let administrators run mixed operating systems on a single server. Finally, hardware virtualization comes to the x86 platform, thanks to Intel and AMD. This is huge – this arena has long been ruled by IBM's expensive mainframes. Now we little people get to play. Virtualization is going to be dominated by open source operating systems like Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, and others as they get up to speed, because they are not encumbered by restrictive, complex, too-expensive licenses, and insane lock-in policies. It will be an attractive migration tool that allows users to migrate from Windows to Linux, for example, at their own place. Just like dual-booting, but with the advantage of having both operating systems to use at the same time.
In the long-timid world of Tier 1 (HP, IBM, Dell) vendors, desktop and peripheral support continue to server offerings, but anything else has been very slow in coming. But it's happening, and there is no turning back. Hewlett-Packard has blatantly supported Linux on printers and multi-function devices for a few years. Now they are offering Red Hat workstations, and claim that all of their Personal Workstations support Linux. Just like their printers, they even post a matrix showing exactly what is supported. They're even making noises about Linux laptops. For all of this, I can almost forgive them for being paranoid spymasters.
Dell has a long history of making lot of noise about loving the penguin, but when you get to their website, they bait-and-switch you. Links don't work, or they go to pages that sing in praises of Windows and don't even mention Linux. Or they give you FreeDOS. But even Dell is finally inching into the Linux desktop www.dell.com/linux market for real.
Fearless Prediction
Small mobile devices are the future of computing. Someday a mobile phone will also be a full-fledged PC that does everything a desktop computer can do today. Because personal computing will become a service, with the processing power, data storage, and system administration all handled by the service providers. Reliable voice-recognitions technologies will be the tipping point, because (obviously) trying to do complex tasks on a phone keypad is nuts. About as much fun as web-surfing or watching movies on a two-inch screen.
What about that two-inch screen, you ask? No one can write letters and parse spreadsheets and create horrid PowerPoint slide shows on a tiny telephone screen. Duh, the phones of the future will have holographic projectors. So the world will be even fuller of babbling idiots on telephones bumping blindly into everything, and normal people like you and me who enjoy peace and quiet are going to go on slapping-faces-and-breaking-phones rampages. Some will hail us liberators. Some will call us just plain nuts.

1. Upgrade path. If you are on Great Plains version, earlier than 8.0, then you cannot upgrade in one step and you need to develop your understanding on the upgrade path. For example, if you are on version 7.5, consider either upgrading to 8.0 and then go to 10.0 or upgrading to 9.0 and then go to 10.0. If you are on archaic versions: 6.0 and earlier, please get support from professional Great Plains consultant
