How to Get into IT without Experience or Qualifications.

If there was ever an industry to get into, Information Technology must be it. The opportunities abound for earning a lucrative living and now is the time to get on board.

But how? If you have computer skill but no experience (or qualifications), the employment agencies will tell you the same old line, "You need experience before anyone will look at you."

It's just plain old Catch-22. You need the work to get the experience but you can't get that first job to give you a track record and therefore verifiable exp
rience. With this logic, it amazes me that anyone actually gets into IT!

Qualifications help but even that is no guarantee nowadays of getting an IT job. And what do you do when you don't have qualifications but you want to start now? I mean right now, not 3 months later after you've paid a fortune for certification and given up your job to have enough study time.

All is not lost. You have two alternatives.

#1. Offer your services free of charge

For a company to take on - as an employee - someone with no experience is a risky proposition. But all companies need IT help. Therefore, do the following:

a) Make a list of 10 local small businesses with approximately 5 to 10 employees. This size of business is too small to have a permanent in-house IT manager yet big enough to have need for IT support.

b) Call each with the following script:

"I'm calling about the possibility of working for your company free of charge in exchange for work experience. So, I'd like to speak to the owner about this please. Could you see if they are available?"

This will get the attention of whoever answers the phone as they'll realise it's not just another sales call. You'll have a high chance of getting through to the boss.

c) If you get through to the boss, say…

"I'm approaching you because I want to work for your company free of charge in exchange for work experience and a good reference. My area of expertise is in IT. I'm an expert on computer systems and feel sure I can provide some valuable input to your company. And it won't cost you anything. Can we set up a meeting to explore this possibility?"

Get straight to the point as business owners are very busy creatures indeed. Go for a meeting where you have the opportunity to explain in detail how you can help them out. When you explain over the phone, it is much easier for them to terminate the call without hearing your full story.

d) If you fail to get through to the boss, say…

"Can I leave my number so he can call me if interested? The number is 123 456-7899. I am contacting a number of other companies today so the earlier he can contact me the better. Thanks."

Put the pressure on them to respond quickly or forever loose the chance of using you free of charge.

e) When you arrive for your interview, you would have already prepared your resume so the boss can see at a glance what your background is. In addition to that, outline your IT skills and where you think these skills would benefit a company. For example, if you were good at website design and promotion, say…

"I could improve the number of visitors to your website and get them to leave their email for you."

This may then lead into specifics on how you can help that company.

f) If you end up doing some work for that company, keep it to 2 to 4 weeks. You don't want a zero wage forever! After your no-charge stint, offer to provide future support at a reasonably competitive rate. They may be very pleased with what you did for them and there would be good will established because you did it all for free. When they need future IT support the chances of them choosing you are very high indeed. There you go, your first fee paying customer.

#2: Start up on your own

Yes, you heard me. Start your own computer consultancy - it's not as difficult as you might suspect. All you need is to know more than 90% of the population, which is quite easy when most have poor to mediocre computer literacy. In addition, if you have good skills in a specialist area, you are likely to know more than 99% of the population.

There is one factor working in your favour here: fear of computers. This illogical phobia will open doors for you because what is perceived to be extremely complicated may be a walk in the park for you.

While I'm talking about starting up on your own, this need not mean you will always work for yourself. You can do, but you don't have to. The primary aim here is to get a track record, first and foremost. Then you can decide what to do.

Starting up as an IT consultant is a sizeable topic in itself, but that doesn't mean to say it is not easy. You just need the right information.

The important thing to remember is this: don't listen to anyone (and I mean anyone) who says: you need qualifications; experience; capital; contacts or any of that rubbish. It's simply not true. Sure, all these things help but they are not pre-requisites for you to make a blazing success starting on your own. I started my own consultancy from scratch and I had no money, no contacts, no computer consultancy experience, and worse of all, I was heavily in debt.

Nowadays - after 5 years experience - I have contracts that pay me over $200 per hour. This is a far cry from the pitiful wage I used to earn before I got into IT.

What does it take to get into IT by starting up on your own?

Two things: Knowledge and Action.

Action
Action is the easy part. You just do it! Of course, you need the motivation to get going, to overcome your inertia. But once you start seeing the results, you get pulled along by it all. Your results give you the motivation to take action and the action brings more results. You get caught in an upward spiral.

Knowledge
Knowledge is more difficult. The reason is simple: everyone is full of good sounding advice and it's difficult to know who to listen to. After all, if you listened to most people they would put you off starting in the first place. That is self-defeating.

My recommendation is to only listen to those who have been where you want to go. Talking with someone who runs their own business will give you great insight into what it is really like. Talking with someone who has never run their own business will teach you nothing.

Best of all, speak to someone who is in the industry you want to get into. The information will be 100% relevant and therefore quite likely to be effective. Don't take everything they say as the gospel truth. They may want to help you out but will not divulge their closest kept competitive secrets for fear of losing business to you. This particularly applies if you are local to each other and may therefore cannibalise each others area.

How do you get this information? Again, there are many methods, some easier than others. You could phone up a small business (1 to 5 employees) outside of your locality and ask if you can take the boss out for lunch. Be up front that you want to get into the same industry and would like some advice. I had one guy ask if I would help him a few years back. I was happy to and took great pleasure in it. Now, he is earning a very healthy living doing what he enjoys.

The alternative is to buy related books and materials where you can get in-depth information "How to do it" style.

Conclusion

It does not matter whether you have experience or not. If you have some reasonable computer skills and you want to get into IT, you just have to decide to do it. There is so much opportunity in this rapidly changing industry that your chances of success are very high indeed.

Different types of fuel are required for running standby generators and portable generators. In some models, tri-fuel or dual-fuel configurations allow them to switch from natural gas or propane to gasoline, with the use of a hose. With this aspect in mind, a consumer should purchase a generator after determining the type of fuel that is available in his area.

There are no two ways about the fact that generator set is a piece of equipment that is worth every penny spent, and that it will easily run the whole house in case of utility power failure.

The Old Days

An article commenting on the technology of the Thirties and Forties as compared to that of the present as related by a person who has lived through both eras and watched technological development.

I continue to marvel at the latest technology: iPods, MP3s, DVDs, HDTV, GPS, Satellite Communications, etc., etc., etc. In the 1930s we were quite thrilled by a radio in a cabinet that might also be holding a clock. I can still see the one my folks bought. It sat on a table in the living room and was ab
e to receive 10 or 15 stations on AM. Radio was pretty new, but it was organized in Networks with names still known today NBC and CBS for example. The cartoon character, Dick Tracy, had a two-way wrist radio and was way ahead of his time. Programming was simple. News in the morning until nine; soap operas during the day; kids programs like Orphan Annie, Jack Armstrong the All-American Boy, and others that came on about 5:00 PM. In the evening we had news and commentary, but after 7: 00 PM came the shows: Kraft Music Hall with Bing Crosby, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Eddie Cantor, Fibber McGee and Molly, and others. They came on weekly and most were a half-hour long. The best ones were programs like Lights Out, The Shadow, and The Lone Ranger. We were pretty happy with these and many others, for with the sound-effects used we could readily imagine locations and action. We participated in what was happening much as one does when reading a book.

Radio technology did advance from the living room eventually. One day 1936 my Mother picked me up at school, and as I got into our 1935 black Ford, 4 door convertible, with leather seats, running boards, white walls and wire wheels, and a spare tire mounted in back continental style, I heard something I'd never heard before. My Mother smiled at me as I realized we now had an after market radio in the car. This was very exciting and forward looking stuff in those days. (Sadly no heater yet). Between that and the new phone we had installed in our apartment, I felt like we were on what was later called, "the cutting edge."

My Dad liked to buy the latest thing including an electric clothes washer with a wringer that was installed in the kitchen. Of course, Mom had to take the wash up one floor to the roof to dry the clothes outside. But the item I remember well was a portable radio he got for Mom. It looked like a piece of tan luggage. It was about 14 inches tall and 12 inches wide and 4 inches deep. The top had a lid that, when opened, revealed a dial and two knobs for volume and station selection. We were pretty excited. It could play when plugged into the wall, but, remember, I said it was portable. The back opened up and revealed a wet cell batter system. Periodically we put distilled water into it and it hummed along. It had good range and played all the stations we liked. Yep, there we were: right at the "cutting edge."

Intel's X58 Chipset

Hey everyone, this is Icarus here with some thought on the new Intel X58 chipset.

The Intel X58 chipset was released during November of 2008, and was released as a successor of X48. Now, the importance here is not just the name itself; this is a direct challenge to all of the computer hardware companies out there that have been making large amounts of money off of nVidia chipset motherboards. Now, how does this effect you, the consumer who has sparked an interest in computer hardware?

Well, here's the thing: the
X58 chipset can run SLI. Yes, I just said that: it can run SLI. For those of you who don't know what SLI is, I will explain it in another article today. For now, I will just say that SLI is a program created by NVidia that allows the computer to run more than one video card at the same time.

Now, why does SLI in the X58 matter so much? Well here's the reason why: it takes away a valuable advantage NVidia chipsets had over Intel chipsets. Traditionally, Intel chipsets were only able to run Crossfire and CrossfireX, or just a single NVidia video card without SLI. NVidia chipsets, on the other hand, can only run NVidia Graphics cards(with the exception of patches for some ATI graphics cards) but can run two in SLI and even three in TriSLI. However, now that the X58 can run NVidia graphics cards(GPU's), more consumers will begin to turn to this chipset.

Now, NVidia loses more than one battle here. One of NVidia chipsets motherboards' main concerns for consumers was the price tag. The fact is, that many NVidia chipset motherboards are more expensive than the Intel chipset motherboards. However, this was justifiable because NVidia still had the SLI and TriSLI advantage over Intel chipsets. Now that the X58 chipset can run NVidia GPU's in SLI, NVidia has lost one advantage, and lots its justification for the price tags. And because most consumers only go as far as running two graphics cards in SLI, NVidia may lose a lot of loyal customers.

However, this does not mean that NVidia will fade away or go bankrupt. X58 chipset motherboards can run two graphics cards in SLI, but it cannot run three graphics cards in SLI. NVidia can; therefore, NVidia still gets to keep the enthusiast market under its arms. Another advantage NVidia still has is its apparent ability to overclock better than Intel chipsets. While this advantage may seem to be mysterious because most consumers do not know why this is so, this is still an advantage that NVidia will hold onto. Therefore, NVidia will still be able to keep most of the consumers who know how to overclock well.

Setting up a Windows Time Server

This article introduces how to set up the Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 operating systems to operate as a NTP time server. The article describes how to modify registry entries to configure the Windows Time Service.

The latest Windows operating systems from Microsoft have a time synchronization service installed by default called 'Windows Time'. The time service allows a Windows network to provide time synchronization of all machines within a domain. This article introduces how to set up the Windows 2000 and Windows 2003
operating systems to operate as a NTP time server. The article describes how to modify registry entries to configure the Windows Time Service.

Before modifying any registry entries it is a good idea to backup the registry. In the even of any problems, the registry can then be restored to its former state.

Windows 2000Windows 2000 has an integrated network time synchronization service, installed by default, which can be configured to synchronize to a Time Server. In fact, by changing associated registry settings, the service can act as both a time client and a time server to synchronize other network time clients.

The Windows Time service should be present in the systems service list. The application executable is 'w32time.exe'. The parameter list for time service should be present in the in the registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeParametersThe Windows 2000 operating system can operate as a time client and synchronize to a time server by setting the parameter 'NTP Server' to the IP address of a Time Server.

By default, the Windows 2000 machine will synchronize to the specified time server every 8 hours, or 3 times a day. This may not be enough to maintain accurate synchronization and can be easily increased. Setting the 'Period' parameter to how many times each day synchronization is required can reduce the period. Setting the 'Period' parameter to 48 will activate synchronization with the time server once every half hour.

The Windows 2000 operating system can also be configured to act as a time server by setting the 'Local NTP' registry setting to '1'.

After changing any of the registry settings for the windows time service, the service must be restarted for the settings to take effect. The time service can be started or stopped from the service control applet in the Administrative Tools menu. The service can also be controlled via the DOS net command using:

'net start w32time' and 'net stop w32time'Windows 2003With Windows 2003, Microsoft has reportedly expanded on the original Windows 2000 time service by providing a true NTP implementation. The Windows 2003 time service, installed by default, can synchronize to a NTP Server. Indeed, by changing registry settings, the time service can act as both a time server and client to synchronize other network clients in the domain.

The 'Windows Time' service should be present in the systems service list. The application executable is 'w32time.exe'. The parameter list for the Windows 2003 time service should be present in the registry at:

TroubleshootingA number of problems may be encountered when setting up the Windows Time Service. Network Time Protocol operates using the UDP protocol over TCP/IP. Therefore, the TCP/IP network protocol must be operational for NTP to operate successfully. Synchronization problems may also arise when NTP attempts to synchronize to an inaccurate timing reference or if network delays are overly excessive.

Synchronizing Network ComponentsIn addition to synchronizing Windows servers and workstations, time servers can also be used to synchronise network components, such as switches, routers and hubs. Any network components that can synchronise to a NTP time server can be pointed to the Windows server to achieve synchronization. In this way the whole network and accompanying components can be accurately synchronized.

A client of mine once requested that I change the look and feel of their search results page. The client was a large company that had decided to change the design of their SharePoint portal. The portal had a search center which was where I needed to make the change.

This is how I did it:

First of all I needed a Core Results Web Part. You can add a web part to your results page from the Web Parts Gallery or use the SharePoint web part that is automatically added to each search results page.

Next
I had to setup the fields (columns) I wanted to see in the search result. To do so - open the properties of the Core results web part and under the Results Query Options change the Selected Columns xml text. To add a new column you need add this text to the xml before </Columns> tag:

Save the changes and now you can start to redesign the look and feel of the search results. The fastest way to do this is to use the XML of the search results. To access the XML you need to add this code instead of the XSLT code of the web part in the XSL Editor:

Save your changes and do a test search. You will get an XML code of the search results. Copy this code and paste it to notepad. Save the file on your desktop and open SharePoint Designer. Connect to one of your SharePoint sites and create a new blank ASPX page. After this go in to the design mode of your page and add a new DataView Web Part. In the Data Source details choose the XML files and add a new XML file. In the new opened window browse to the file you saved before and import it to SharePoint Designer.

Once you perform this operation you'll see your file in the XML files section. Click on this file and press "Show Data".

Now you will be able to design your Data View Web Part however you want, using columns from the Search Results XML file. You will also be able to perform sorting/filtering/grouping on your search results but keep in mind that each function will create results only on the page you are currently using. In other words, if you sort your search results by site title the grouping will group the content of your current search results page.

After you finish designing your page you the only thing left you need to do is copy the entire code from your page, between the tags <XSL> and </XSL>, and paste it to the XSL Editor of the Core Results Web Part. Save your changes and verify that everything works by doing a test search. If you like the look of your search results page you can delete the temp ASPX page from your SharePoint site and delete the search results XML file.

You can set a specific search results page on the server level and redirect all search results to that page.

You can even define a search results page for a Search Box Web Part - it will redirect all search results (not including the Contextual Search Scope Search results) to the page you defined.

If you create a new Search Center you may want to redirect all search queries to the Search Center search results page.

You can setup this function on the scopes level or in the Search Settings of the root site in your Site Collection.

Traffic Exchanges - Are They Worth the Effort?

There are advertisements, articles and more that all state how great these traffic exchanges are. But are they really worth the time and effort they require? Will you really get a lot of traffic and if you do get traffic, is it good, purchasing traffic?

There are many traffic exchanges; TS25, Traffichits, Traffic Swarm, TrafficG, etc... If you can think of a subject there is probably a traffic exchange named after it - there's even Mafia Traffic and Dead hits. The basic idea is that you click on a website and watch it for 1
-30 seconds and for every 1-3 sites you view 1 person will view your site. This can be quite tedious as to get a sizable amount of traffic you must view an awful lot of websites.

Most of these traffic exchanges have come up with an upsell from the free traffic exchange. For a set fee around $10-$30 per month you get 1,000 or so free credits and a quicker timer or a better conversion 1:2 instead of 1:3 or similar. The problem here is that most of this traffic is seen as robotic by the search engines so it will ot help much in your ranking. This traffic is also people just like you trying to get traffic. Very, very few will have any interest in your product or site and most will click right through to the next screen. So yours doesn't even fuully load - in other words they won't even see your site. Yes, there are sales made through the traffic exchanges, but it is so low of a conversion that you must really visit tens of thousands of pages for each conversion/sale.

Most traffic exchanges do have a virulence aspect built in which can help, but just like with Mary Kay and any MLM program, only the first program participants will reap much from this. You need a huge downline for it to be worth your time and this can take a long time to build. Just like Mary Kay, there are only 10 or so people per exchange getting most of the results. The rest are basically wasting their time and helping others (their sponsors) to get rich.

There are better ways to spend your time. Write articles and submit them to sites like ezinearticles for maximum readership. This will give you traffic that is virulent and long lasting. And it isn't a scam like MLM, its just you and your site links getting all the benefits. If you write interesting and helpful articles you will get great, targeted traffic. Ezinearticles even has numerous pages devoted to help you learn what to write and how to writ it to get maximum effect. You can also do press releases and word of mouth through forums and other free sites. In the long run you will do much better. Traffic exchanges are a waste of time. Don't take my word for it - try them and you'll see why I'm right.

Microsoft Great Plains: Government & Non-Profit Organization workflow implementation

Usually workflow & messaging is realized in CRM and then transactions are just logged into Accounting/ERP/MRP. In the case of Microsoft Business Solutions products: Microsoft Great Plains, Navision, Solomon, Axapta the natural CRM choice would be Microsoft CRM. However typical CRM application targets Sales automation, which is usually not applicable to government structure, non-profit or public company (community services, public utilities, churches, charities, etc.). Not-for-profit organization needs purchasing and
equisition workflow, payroll approval workflow, and in certain cases special General Ledger (GL) transactions workflow.

Microsoft CRM doesn't provide the functionality. Then how could this be realized? We'll provide two scenarios to realize this customization:

Lotus Notes/Domino approach. In Great Plains you could realize either Great Plains Dexterity triggers or MS SQL database trigger on certain events (Purchase Order creation, Payroll Transaction, GL transaction). This event calls COM+ application and this one in turn creates Lotus objects via Java agent (Lotus Notes Domino should be version 6.0 or newer). This is basically the bridge. Then in Lotus you have to design workflow – but this is natural task for Lotus and it is not difficult. Users should work in Lotus to get transactions approved and when it should be posted in Great Plains – Lotus calls SQL script against Great Plains company database. Developer should know Microsoft Great Plains tables structure
Microsoft Exchange/Outlook approach. This is the second way – when you do not want to deploy Lotus Domino, and would be OK with simple messaging and notification through Microsoft Exchange. The technical realization should either involve Dexterity or SQL trigger, calling COM object (Dexterity) or simply sending notification email from MS SQL Server. The scenario to post or take off hold from Great Plains transaction could be realized via MS Exchange event sink – this MS Exchange event handler will check all the messages and when the one has certain criteria – it calls MS SQL Server stored procedure in the Great Plains company database
Programming Tools. Java agent to address Lotus – you need either Sun JDK or somewhat more advanced: VisualCafe or JBuilder. Great Plains Dexterity trigger should be done in Dexterity IDE – this language requires expertise and it is difficult to code without experience, Microsoft Exchange event sink should be programmed in Visual Studio as COM+ application, then you need to register COM+ application through Control Panel->System->Component Services
Feasibility. To be honest and do not set unrealistic expectations – this Workflow implementation is pretty serious project and we do not recommend if for small non-profit organization – it is rather for large and mid-size-to-large structure.

In this day and age, computers are everywhere and run almost everything. We rely on them in our personal lives, our work lives, our social lives.. absolutely everywhere. All we want is for our computer to come on and work the way we expect it to and do
hat we ask of it. I mean, really, its not rocket science! We just want to check some e-mail or type a report or listen to some music or play a game or surf the web or whatever. But we want to do it without all the crashes and error messages and popups and the like. Plug and Play should mean Plug and Play not Plug and Pray but they still havent gotten that quite right yet, have they?

I mean Microsoft with all of its updates. why couldnt they just get it right the first time (theyve been doing it long enough). Should we all just really go out and get a mac? And all of these ridiculous, flambouyant drivers and programs that HP installs with your printer that bomb or crash 70% of the time. Whatever happened to the good old days when you just told your computer that you had an HP laserjet 4 and the driver was installed and that was it? You never heard from the printer or its driver ever again. You simply told the computer to print whatever you wanted printed and that was it.

Well, heres the good news. If you, like most of us, are tied to your computer and cant live without but are tired of all the little bumps in the road that annoy you and keep you from being as productive as you can. finally theres a solution. Still if we look to the banking system in Kurdistan we see that we are far behind the rest of the world and is not our fault, because such a system depends on a lot of factors which is not our concern here.

Lets come back to the title of this article and try to understand what means and why we need such a system.

As you see from the title its not Mobile credit card as anyone think about it, its in fact to item been separated by (-).

Mobile which we all know is a device used for communication.

There are some facilities with the mobile telephone device which must highlight.

- Top-up cards: you buy in any shop a card have a pin number on the back you enter

this pin in your mobile, you get the money you paid been transferred to your

mobile to use as credit to make phone calls.

Credit card: a plastic card usually you get it from your bank, when you have an effective account with them, with this card the bank gives you a limited amount of credit that you can spend without having any money in your account and you pay back the amount in a certain period, if you failed to pay it back in that period they charge you interest. There are also other type of cards like (Debt card, Cash card,.etc)

The idea behind this article is to combine both tools and there facilities to be used together.

This is not new and its already been implemented in many countries for example in Japan they use this idea in a very efficient and more complicated way.

As I mentioned that we are lucky that we can use the latest ready made technologies in Kurdistan but before talking about the detail of this technology let us look at some of the advantages, because Im sure the first question we will see is why we need this.

1- People will be encouraged to learn about the banking system

2- No need to carry a lot of cash for shopping

3- The care about the mobile number and personal details

4- The interaction which will be introduced between mobile companies and big retailer

5- The security that you dont carry cash with you.

6- The assurance that your payment was recorded somewhere.

7- Promotions and offers can be given based on the expenditure in more efficient way.

8- The use of the mobile facilities in more appropriate way.

Its time now to get an idea on how this system works, with two examples or two facilities, the first one is the Credit transfer, this is a new facility been provided by some companies, they let you share the money you have with other people and transfer it to them via text massage, with a small fee.

The second facility is to pay for an item by your mobile, some companies right now charge there customers a certain amount of money to pay there monthly internet connection this is done by sending a text message to a specific number and get confirmation via a text reply, then you have your connection activated immediately.

Our idea is the combination of both.

By the agreement between the mobile company and the retailer they can arrange the payment of the purchased items via mobile, and this can be done as follows.

1- After scanning the purchased items for the customer and revelling the total amount to be paid the, cashier will ask about the method of payment, if the customer wants to pay by mobile there depending on the setup agreement of the system it can follow different ways:

The Customer can use there mobile to enter the total to be paid and send a text message to there provider and get the amount deducted from there mobile credit.

The retailer may have a special mobile device that requires the user to enter there ID with the amount required to be paid and the provider confirm on the same device by a text says confirmed.

Other methods are also possible and it can be arranged between the two parties.

2- once the customer paid for there items a record will be registered on the retailer database in which they provide a receipt for the customer and at the end of the sales period they can take this record to the mobile company and get there sales cash back.

3- There are certain things should be arranged also for example the customer should make sure that they have enough Cash in there mobile otherwise they encounter some charges and the sale procedure will not go through. Also the mobile provider should check for the account credit before preceding the sale.

4- Both the mobile and the retailer can make some small amount of charge for this service and it will not effect the customer, for example customers can be offered 1 or 2% discount when they use this method so when they use this method the charge will not effect on there total payment.

5- Retailer will have a very good benefit like :

Prevent the cash problem

Have some record about their customers so they provide promotions

Have a record about what items been sold more and to whom so they service there customer better.

6- The mobile company benefit also by having there services been used widely and provide them with a huge cash flow.

Although in the trail on initial period there will be a lot of problems because of the unsolicited used in our society and the maximum top up card we have right now but this can be changed and they need a lot of assurance from the mobile company for big amount top ups.

3.       FRx. FRX Report Designer advantage over Crystal and SRS is the connection to General Ledger GP interface. In FRx you can also cross company boundaries and create consolidated report. FRx allows you to create so called reporting trees, where you can create report by specific GP segments in multiple companies. Plus, FRx give you the link to Excel worksheet, where you have something like small branch accounting data, which you would like to see consolidated with corporate income statement

4.       Microsoft Excel reporting options. You should be aware, that if your managers require you to build data warehouses on the daily basis, then you should implement SQL Analytical Services with Excel Pivoting tables or Cognos

6.       Microsoft Access Reporting option. If your IT people expertise covers MS Access, consider using ODBC connection to GP database and use Access Reports

7.       MS Visual Studio.Net custom programming reports. If you have strong C# and VB developers, you should consider training them in eConnect and then they should be capable to build web reporting applications. In the case if you would like to extend eConnect logic with direct access to GP tables, please review GP tables structure – Microsoft Dynamics GP->Tools->Resource Description->Tables

8.       Archaic DB platforms. If you are still on GP 7.5 and earlier, you may be using Pervasive SQL Server 2000 or Ctree/Faircom. If this is your case, you have to use one of the following tools: MS Access, Crystal Reports (where you are restricted to ODBC driver limitations to cross GP modules restrictions), or GP Dexterity customization. Also if you are on old version you should consider upgrade if you business is in active mode – current version of GP is 10.0 and you have to use GP migration tool to MS SQL Server version

Ok now for the good news, there are ways to protect yourself from these harmful programs. Computer anti-virus and spyware detection programs are common today. I have found that a single protection program is not sufficient protection for the computer.
For my everyday protection, I have a program to remove spyware and a separate program for virus protection. Where the anti-virus program is great for virus protection the spyware program is great for removing spyware and Trojan horse files. The important thing to remember is to update your program files often and at least run your spyware program everyday. Quarantine the bad programs and get back to enjoying yourself on the internet.

Sleek and sexy and powerful to boot. Red ones are BETTER, MEANER, BIGGER, FASTER.

We've fallen in love with the little Dell review notebook from this roundup. It arrived stock with Vista Business installed but even that did little to dampen our enthusiasm about the little red wonder.

Part of Dell's XPS range and more of a mid-range notebook than anything else, the test scores were sufficiently impressive to be almost shocking. Sweeping the board with SuperPi, the first place seems fitting for the Ferra
i-red unit.

While it only placed second in the 3Dmark run, it still posted a decent score for a laptop that is apparently designed more for business than gaming. What was of note was a random test of the 1530's on-the-fly network device switching which was unplanned and would have slipped by if not for a power failure. The Dell picked up a stray signal from a nearby Wi-Fi hotspot and started installing updates while everyone else was cursing the delay to this month's articles.

From the blinding boot speed through to the durable, if plain, laptop bag, there is very little that this XPS has left out. There are three integrated USB's, HDMI inputs, Firewire and a memory card reader arrayed around the chassis. The 2.0 megapixel webcam and mics are perfect for those on-the-go meetings and for a little added security; a biometric scanner has been thrown in to keep those logins a bit tighter. The fact that there is less lag booting into Vista Business on this machine than on our desktop PCs with XP is also a huge selling point.

Bluetooth has not been left out in the cold and there are a couple of optional extras if you're willing to spend the money on them. A TV tuner card, Blu Ray drive or solid state drives are just a few such titbits. Shelling out for some of these can push your notebook in one direction or the other, from business extension to multimedia powerhouse to gaming rig. The choices are there.

The only gripe we've got with the 1530 is the battery life and the DVD drive. The battery life is always a problem on a notebook and turning down the resource usage does extend uptime considerably but it won't function as well. Looking at the slot-loading drive; it fits the aesthetic for the XPS extremely well but somehow we just prefer the stability of a tray-loading drive when using a portable machine.

Make no mistake; the Dell XPS 1530 is seemingly all about business. But it functions equally well as a multimedia or portable gaming rig. It may not run Crysis but you've got no business running that on a notebook at work anyway.

Digital camcorders, now the dominant type, generally offer very good to excellent picture quality, along with very good sou
d capability, compactness, and ease of handling. Making copies of a digital recording won't result in a loss of picture or sound quality. You can even take rudimentary still photos with some digital camcorders.

Analog camcorders, now a small part of the market, generally have good picture and sound quality and are less expensive. Some analog units are about as compact and easy to handle as digital models, while others are a bit bigger and bulkier.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

Sony dominates the camcorder market, with multiple models in a number of formats. Other top brands include Canon, JVC, Panasonic, and Samsung.

Most digital models come in the MiniDV format. Formats such as the disc-based DVD-RAM and DVD-R have also appeared. Some digital models weigh as little as one pound.

MiniDV. Don't let their small size deceive you. Although some models can be slipped into a large pocket, MiniDV camcorders can record very high-quality images. They use a unique tape cassette, and the typical recording time is 60 minutes at standard play (SP) speed. Expect to pay $6.50 for a 60-minute tape. You'll need to use the camcorder for playback—it converts its recording to an analog signal, so it can be played directly into a TV or VCR. If the TV or VCR has an S-video input jack, use it to get a high-quality picture.

Price range: $350 to more than $2,000.

Digital 8. Also known as D8, this format gives you digital quality on Hi8 or 8mm cassettes, which cost $6.50 and $3.50, respectively. The Digital 8 format records with a faster tape speed, so a "120-minute" cassette lasts only 60 minutes at SP. Most models can also play your old analog Hi8 or 8mm tapes.

Price range: $350 to $800.

Disc-based. Capitalizing on the explosive growth and capabilities of DVD movie discs, these formats offer benefits tape can't provide: long-term durability, a compact medium, and random access to scenes as with a DVD. The 3 1/4-inch discs record standard MPEG-2 video, the same format used in commercial DVD videos. The amount of recording time varies according to the quality level you select: from 20 minutes per side at the highest-quality setting for DVD-RAM up to about 60 minutes per side at the lowest setting. DVD-RAM discs are not compatible with most DVD players, but the discs can be reused. DVD-R is supposed to be compatible with most DVD players and computer DVD drives, but the discs are write-once. We paid about $25 at a local retailer for a blank DVD-RW.

Price range: $700 to $1,000.

Most analog camcorders now use the Hi8 format; VHS-C and Super VHS-C are fading from the market. Blank tapes range in price from $3.50 to $6.50. Analog camcorders usually weigh around 2 pounds. Picture quality is generally good, though a notch below that of digital.

Price range: $225 to $500.

IMPORTANT FEATURES

A flip-out liquid-crystal-display (LCD) viewer is becoming commonplace on all but the lowest-priced camcorders. You'll find it useful for reviewing footage you've shot and easier to use than the eyepiece viewfinder for certain shooting poses. Some LCD viewers are hard to use in sunlight, a drawback on models that have only a viewer and no eyepiece.

Screens vary from 2 1/2 to 4 inches measured diagonally, with a larger screen offered as a step-up feature on higher-priced models. Since an LCD viewer uses batteries faster than an eyepiece viewfinder does, you don't have as much recording time when the LCD is in use.

An image stabilizer automatically reduces most of the shaking that occurs from holding the camcorder as you record a scene. Most stabilizers are electronic; a few are optical. Either type can be effective, though mounting the camcorder on a tripod is the surest way to get steady images. If you're not using a tripod, you can try holding the camcorder with both hands and propping both elbows against your chest.

Full auto switch essentially lets you point and shoot. The camcorder automatically adjusts the color balance, shutter speed, focus, and aperture (also called the "iris" or "f-stop" with camcorders).

Autofocus adjusts for maximum sharpness; manual focus override may be needed for problem situations, such as low light. (With some camcorders, you may have to tap buttons repeatedly to get the focus just right.) With many models, you can also control exposure, shutter speed, and white balance.

The zoom is typically a finger control--press one way to zoom in, the other way to widen the view. The rate at which the zoom changes will depend on how hard you press the switch. Typical optical zoom ratios range from 10:1 to 26:1. The zoom relies on optical lenses, just like a film camera (hence the term "optical zoom"). Many camcorders offer a digital zoom to extend the range to 400:1 or more, but at a lower picture quality.

For tape-based formats, analog or digital, every camcorder displays tape speeds the same way a VCR does. Every model, for example, includes an SP (standard play) speed. Digitals have a slower, LP (long play) speed that adds 50 percent to the recording time. A few 8mm and Hi8 models have an LP speed that doubles the recording time. All VHS-C and S-VHS-C camcorders have an even slower EP (extended play) speed that triples the recording time. With analog camcorders, slower speeds worsen picture quality. Slow speed usually doesn't reduce picture quality on digital camcorders. But using slow speed means sacrificing some seldom-used editing options and may restrict playback on other camcorders.

Disc-based formats have a variety of modes that trade off recording time for image quality.

Quick review lets you view the last few seconds of a scene without having to press a lot of buttons. For special lighting situations, preset auto-exposure settings can be helpful. A "snow & sand" setting, for example, adjusts shutter speed or aperture to accommodate high reflectivity.

A light provides some illumination for close shots when the image would otherwise be too dark. Backlight compensation increases the exposure slightly when your subject is lit from behind and silhouetted. An infrared-sensitive recording mode (also known as night vision, zero lux, or MagicVu) allows shooting in very dim or dark situations, using infrared emitters. You can use it for nighttime shots, although colors won't register accurately in this mode.

Audio/video inputs let you record material from another camcorder or from a VCR, useful for copying part of another video onto your own. (A digital camcorder must have such an input jack if you want to record analog material digitally.) Unlike a built-in microphone, an external microphone that is plugged into a microphone jack won't pick up noises from the camcorder itself, and it typically improves audio performance.

A camcorder with digital still capability lets you take snapshots, which can be downloaded to your computer. The photo quality is generally inferior to that of a still camera.

Features that may aid editing include a built-in title generator, a time-and-date stamp, and a time code, which is a frame reference of exactly where you are on a tape--the hour, minute, second, and frame. A remote control helps when you're using the camcorder as a playback device or when you're using a tripod. Programmed recording (a self-timer) starts the camcorder recording at a preset time.

HOW TO CHOOSE

Pick your price range and format. The least-expensive camcorders on the market are analog. All the rest are digital.

Once you've decided which part of the price spectrum to explore, you need to pick a specific recording format. That determines not only how much you'll be spending for tapes or discs, but also how much recording time you'll get. The tape-based formats are typically superior in picture quality.

With analog, you can get 120 to 300 minutes of recording on a Hi8 cassette; with the SVHS-C or VHS-C formats, you can get only 30 to 120 minutes.

With digital formats that use MiniDV, Digital 8, or MicroMV tapes, you can get at least 60 minutes of recording on a standard cassette. MiniDV and D8 cassettes are the least expensive and easiest to find.

Digital DVD camcorders from Panasonic and Hitachi can accommodate DVD-RAM discs, which can be reused but aren't compatible with all DVD players. All brands also use DVD-R, one-use discs that work in most DVD players. The standard setting yields 60 minutes of recording; the "fine" setting, 30 minutes.

If you're replacing an older camcorder, think about what you'll do with the tapes you've accumulated. If you don't stay with the same format you've been using, you will probably want to transfer the old tapes to an easily viewed medium, such as a DVD.

If you're buying your first camcorder, concentrate on finding the best one for your budget, regardless of format.

Check the size, weight, and controls. In the store, try different camcorders to make sure they fit your hand and are comfortable to use. Some models can feel disconcertingly tiny. (You'll need to use a tripod if you want rock-steady video, no matter which camcorders you choose.) Most camcorders are designed so that the most frequently used controls--the switch to zoom in and out, and the record button--fall readily to hand. Make sure that the controls are convenient and that you can change the tape or DVD and remove the battery.

Check the flip-out LCD viewer. Most measure 2.5 inches on the diagonal, but some are larger, adding about $100 to the price. If the viewer seems small and difficult to use or suffers from too much glare, consider trading up to a similar model or a different brand to get a better screen.

Think about the lighting. A camcorders isn't always used outdoors or in a brightly lit room. You can shoot video in dim light, but don't expect miracles. And yes, this motherboard may be, indeed, a KILLER motherboard. Not for us, but for other motherboard vendors, because it may perform so well that it may leave all other motherboards in its dust.

So far, not much information has been released. However, I know this much; there are three full x16 PCI Express slots for Tri-SLI configurations, and still room left for x1 PCI Express slot for audio cards. Now, here\'s the killer part; there\'s another PCI Express slot. That means there\'re a total of 4 PCI Express slots, all on one motherboard, and one left for the audio. This is, indeed, an enthusiast\'s dream-come-true; you can have Tri-SLI, good audio, AND you can now have a PhysX card that further enhances your PC gaming/graphics experience. Does your image appear good on the screen, but looks blurred, jagged or fuzzy when you print it?

To clearly see the difference of the quality of image on screen and on print, take an image from the internet. Zoom it out or make it larger. Can you see how series of little squares appear on the image? Try to print it and you'll see that the color will fade. There will be a change in the resolution.

Resolution is, basically, the sharpness or crispness of an image. When an image is shrunk, the color looks lively. When
you blow it or enlarge it, the color will fade and the image will look unclear.

Resolution is defined as the number of pixels contained in the monitor. Pixel, from the words "picture element", is the basic unit of programmable color in a computer image. The resolution is measured by the number of dots per inch (dpi), which is equal to the numbers of squares of color in an inch. A standard resolution for an image should be 300dpi and 400dpi for images containing text.

The resolution of an image is inversely proportional to the size of the image. In other words, when you increase the size of the image the resolution decreases, and vice versa. For example, if you enlarge an image, the size, of course, increases. But the quality or sharpness of the image decreases, giving you a blurred image.

When you extract images from the internet, most probably, you will have a poor quality image. Internet images are mostly saved in GIF or JPEG file format, which only consumes 72dpi. The purpose of saving image files on this resolution is to make the image easy to extract. Meaning, these images are not for print use.

Scanners, digital camera, computer monitor and other display devices use the RGB (red, green, blue) color mode, while in the printing process CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) color mode is used. Meaning, you have to expect change in the color of the image when you print it. To reduce the problem, you must convert your image from RGB to CMYK. There are image editing programs that offer color conversion, such as Photoshop or Corel PhotoPaint.

Do not expect to get good images from the internet. You must resort to other sources like real photos or pictures from magazines. When you scan, compare the size of the photo to the size of your layout. If the photo is larger than your layout, scanning at 300dpi is enough. If it is smaller, adjust your scanner's resolution setting and percentage size. If there are texts over the image, lighten the image so the text will be readable. If you do not know how create good prints, you can resort to a printing press.

Cisco CCNA Certification Exam Tutorial: The Config Register And Password Recovery

To pass the CCNA exam and excel in today's networks, you must know how to work with the Cisco config register and recover from a lost password. Learn how from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.

Whether you're preparing for the CCNA certification exam or not, you must be prepared for the following question:

"Hey, I reloaded this router and it wants an enable password. Do you know it?"

Because if you don't, and there's no one available who does, you need to perform a passwor
recovery technique on the router - without erasing the current configuration.   This involves manipulating the config register, and a misstep here can be fatal to the router's chances of recovery!

Obviously, that can make you pretty nervous about changing the config register, CCNA or not. Different Cisco routers and switches have different techniques for password recovery, so the following discussion is limited to the 2500 series. If you need to do this for another model, do a quick search engine check for "password recovery cisco" and you should quickly find a document for the Cisco router you're working with.

For the 2500 series, you start by reloading the router and sending a BREAK signal during the first 60 seconds of the reload. Depending on the terminal program you're using, this can be the hardest part of the entire process! For most, just press during this one-minute period. If this doesn't work, you may need to check Help in your terminal program to find out how to send this break signal.

As a result of the break sequence, the router will go into ROM Monitor mode. The commands here are totally different than the ones you're used to working with in the router's IOS. Use the command o/r 0x2142 to change the config register setting, and reload the router by entering the letter "i".

This config register setting doesn't erase anything, but it does make the router ignore the contents of NVRAM. This means that you'll be prompted to go into the dreaded Setup Mode, which you do NOT want to do. Simply press "N" and type "enable" when you're at the router prompt. (If you do go into Setup Mode, you can always get out with , a handy command to know for the CCNA exam and for real life, as you can see!)

Be very careful with the next step. You want to enter the command "configure memory" or "copy start run" at this point - don't enter "write memory" or "copy run start". Success on the CCNA exam and in working with real-world networks is all about the details, and this is a very important detail.

At this point, you can look at the running configuration and see the passwords, and change them if you wish. However, we're not done. The config register needs to be set back to its default of 0x2102, and you do so with the global command "config-register 0x2102". Now you want to save your config with "write memory" or "copy run start", and reload the router.   The router will now boot as it normally would.

Knowing how to recover from a lost password is a vital skill for both the Cisco CCNA certification exam and for success in real-world networks.   It's not something we have to do every day, but when the time calls for it, we have to do it correctly and completely - and that includes that final config-register change!

Part of earning your CCNA and CCNP - especially passing the difficult CIT exam - is becoming a master network troubleshooter. Today, we'll take a look at troubleshooting EIGRP and spotting common errors.

Most adjacency issues are easily resolved - mistyped IP address, bad wildcard mask in the neighbor statement, mistyped EIGRP
S number, and so forth. You know the AS number has to match, but always double-check that. Next, check the wildcard mask to make sure the correct interfaces are EIGRP-enabled. In the following example, we've configured three loopbacks on R2 and want to advertise all three loopbacks via EIGRP, but R4 only sees one.

R2(config)#int loopback1

R2(config-if)#ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0

R2(config-if)#int loopback2

R2(config-if)#ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0

We know it's not an adjacency issue, because R4 has to have an adjacency to get the route. Perhaps the config on R2 is the problem.

The only one of the three networks that matches that network statement is 10.1.1.0 /24.  As a result, the networks 10.1.2.0 /24 and 10.1.3.0 /24 will not be advertised.

We could use a network statement with 10.1.0.0 0.0.255.255 to successfully advertise the loopbacks, but by breaking the three networks down into binary, we can see that the three networks have the first 22 bits in common. Therefore, a better wildcard mask to use is 0.0.3.255.

Another factor that must match between potential EIGRP neighbors is the K-metrics, or metric weights. Let's change the EIGRP metric weights on R2 and watch the effect on its adjacency with R4.

Update Prospects' Calendars Without Breaking And Entering

Ever scheduled an event like a teleseminar or product launch? Hopefully
they'll copy down all the details correctly, adjust the time to match their
time zone, AND actually remember to attend. Luckily there's an easy way to
do all this by marking your visitor's calendar with just a couple of clicks
using Microsoft Outlook.

This works because programs like Outlook can read different types of files.
The file we're going to be creating is called a vCalendar file -- be aware
this wil
only work if your visitor has Outlook 97 and above (Outlook
Express is no good here).

What we'll be doing here is creating the event on our computer in the form
of an appointment on the Outlook calendar. Then, we'll export it to a file
our visitors can click on, and when they do, it'll import all the info about
the meeting right into their Outlook calendar.

Let's get started. Open Outlook, go to your calendar and find the correct
date, and double click.

Type in a subject, this will be your event's title. For the location put in
something like the URL if this is an Internet thing or a phone number with a
passcode if this is a phone-based teleseminar.

Then choose a start time and end time, in your time zone. The COOL thing
about this is when the user adds this appointment, it will appear adjusted
to their own time zone.

Then in the body type in any other details the user needs to know about your
event. That's all you need to set, things like the reminder time won't
export so don't bother setting it. Any formatting you do (setting fonts,
making things bold or colorized, etc.) will not save either.

Go to File -> Save As, then where it says "Save As Type" choose "vCalendar
Format (*.vcs)". Save this to your desktop as something like: event.vcs

Then in your .htaccess file, put this in:

AddType text/x-vCalendar .vcs

If you do not have an .htaccess file, put this text in a new text document
(in Notepad), then save as ".htaccess" (with the dot in front) and upload
into the same folder your .vcs file is going.

(That part with adding the .htaccess file *shouldn't* be necessary, we're
just being cautious by adding that in.)

Now upload your event.vcs file. Link to it from an HTML file, and tell
people that if they have Outlook 97 or higher, all they have to do is click
that link, then click "Open" and the event or yours (whatever it is) will be
added to their calendar.

Since the event is adjusted for the person's time zone, there's no guessing
whether or not 6 PM your time means 7 PM or 10 AM their time. In most cases
an alert will appear on their screen 15 minutes before the event starts, so
if you have a teleseminar they'll remember to call in and won't be late.

What's more, a lot of PDAs (Palm Pilots and some cell phones) have Outlook
integration so YOUR meeting could also be copied to their personal
organizer.

The jargon of scanning…

In the world of scanners, you just need to be familiar with two measurements: bit or color depth, and resolution. Both have to do with the reproduction of colors and grayscale images. However, they refer to different aspects of the process.

Bit depth refers to the number of bits of image data the scanner will use for each pixel. One designer proposes a scanner with 24 bit depth to create "true color". This kind of scanner yields 16.7 million colors. To scanner techies, that means 256 x 256 x 256 red, green and blue dot combinations. These days, almost all the scanners available have at least 24-bit capability.

For more colors, and flexibility in adjusting the brightness and contrast, scanners with a bit depth of 30, 36, 48 and more are the equipment you'll need. However, you will spend more money with these things as they are more expensive than the 24-bit scanners.

Resolution/DPI is measured in dots per inch (dpi). The dpi tells you how many spots of information are there in a given area. This relates to the grid of pixels used to represent your images. The higher the dpi, the finer the grid of pixels--- resulting to a more detailed image.

If you're going to send the file via email, you have to scan at 150 dpi, or even less. For print output, anywhere from 200 to 300 is appropriate. If you plan to resize your image, a higher dpi will provide you with more detail and clarity.

Another jargon usually associated with dpi is 'interpolated'. This means that the scanner software is creating extra pixels in between the ones that are scanned.

Others to be considered…

Negatives- One feature that is useful later on is the scanner's ability to scan negatives and/or slides. Negatives contain more detail than prints. For great results, you can scan them at 3000 dpi and then enlarge after. However, this kind of scanner is a bit expensive. In addition, you will also need to invest in specialized software to manage the scans.

Speed- Scanners often show speed in seconds per page for both color and black-and-white. The speed depends on factors such as the type of computer, the dpi setting, and the material/image you are scanning. The average specification for a good scanner would be 20 secs/page.

Software- Most scanners come in bundles that include the scanner itself and the software to manage the scanning operations. Like any other technological device, some bundles are better than others. You just need to look into the specifications that's right for you.

Interface- The interface between the computer and the scanner is often the USB on either Mac or PC. Exceptions are the ScSI or Firewire connectors.

Size- They come in letter size, 8.5 by 11 inches, and legal size at 11 by 14 inches.
