A midsize label convertor shipping orders to 300 or 400 separate addresses every day wanted to eliminate a "sneaker-net" and improve their customer service with a label printer.

As people have started looking towards alternative energy sources, bio-fuels have often come up as a solution.  So what exactly are bio-fuels? How do they differ from fossil fuels? How are they produced? And are they a sustainable solution to the world's energy crisis?

As the name implies, biofuels are fuels derived from organic material. Since they can be made in many ways, they are classified as 1st generation, 2nd generation, and 3rd generation.

First generation bio-fuels are the more common fuels that are
roduced from food crops and animal fats. Some examples include bio-diesel, vegetable oil, and bio-gas.

Second generation bio-fuels are made from waste biomass, making them a more sustainable solution as compared to their 1st gen counterparts. They include various alcohols (such as ethanol) and diesel derived from wood and even human excrement.

Third generation bio-fuels are generally made from algae that are farmed on a massive scale.  By way of photosynthesis and the breaking down of carbon dioxide, the carbohydrates extracted from these micro-organisms is used to make various fuels.

So what separates bio-fuels from fossil fuels?

Bio-fuels differ from fossil fuels in the following ways:

Where bio-fuels can be made very quickly, fossil fuels take millions of years to be made.

The pollution from fossil fuels is far more severe. Although burning bio-fuels also creates emissions, the carbon dioxide is more environmentally friendly and absorbed easily by crops and organisms.

Fossil fuels are non-renewable, whereas bio-fuels tend be more renewable. As long as there is human excrement, there will be bio-fuels.  Furthermore, with the help of crop rotation, there can be an endless supply of bio-fuels.

This leads us on to the advantages of bio-fuels:

• As more people use bio-fuels, it lowers the demand on pollution creating fossil-fuels.
• This helps reduce harmful carbon emissions, making bio-fuels more friendly for the environment.
• And since they can be made from almost any organic substance, bio-fuels are a cheap alternative for consumers.

Bio-fuels sound too good to be true. There must be some disadvantages to producing and using them.  So, are there any?

Like any new technology, of course there are disadvantages

Although they are environmentally friendly, bio-fuels have been ironically criticized by the environmental community, for the reasons given below:

• It has long been debated on the usefulness on first generation bio-fuels as compared to the shortage of food they could cause. Producing bio-fuels from crops make the food worthless for us to eat. And some people believe that we should rather use those crops to cure world hunger than to power our vehicles and homes.
• The large farmlands necessary to produce first and third generation bio-fuels can result in us encroaching on the natural ecology of plants and animals.

So you can see, biofuels are still a contentious issue. However , we believe that with the correct management - such as crop rotation - and improved technology biofuels can be a sustainable solution that will do more good than harm. But only time will tell.

The mountainous terrain, lack of a modern road network, and long distances between customers made billing and meter reading difficult and accurate record keeping impossible. The Problem

Meter readers travel on motorcycles. There was no logical way to plan their routes in the cities. In rural areas, they followed power lines off dirt track roads, until they found a meter at the end of a cable. They matched the meter's serial number to that on a card and wrote in the new reading. At the day's end, the data was entered in to the company's computer system. Bills were printed and delivered by a team of distributors, who retraced the previous day's routes. Customers paid cash or had seven days to make payment at the nearest company office. Some meter readers could not find or be bothered to look for customers, so they simply made up the numbers.

The Solution

The electricity company equipped each meter reader with a mobile payment system that included a thermal printer and custom software. After entering the new reading into the hand-held computer, meter readers print out and deliver the electricity bills in the same visit. Back at the office, the workstations are docked and data entered. Information is available to counter staff at the company's collection centres. They enter the customer's account number into their desk top when presented with the bill, confirm the amount payable, collect payment, and print out a receipt.

The Benefits of a Mobile Payment System

An engineer at the electricity company said the benefits were immediate. The company reduced the number of meter readers from 45 to 25, reduced the data entry staff from 15 to 5, eliminated the 43 bill distributors, and reduced the administrative staff who re-keyed the data.

With instant billing, the payment collection cycle was shortened. The software includes a prompt which is a description of the next meter to be read, overcoming the problem of route planning.

Made up readings have been eliminated, since they instantly show up as anomalies. In addition, the hand held computer's internal clock imprints the time the entry was made, allowing studies to be conducted.

Improved Power Usage Efficiency

The company found a significant side benefit with its new system- a 5% improvement in overall power usage efficiency, resulting in the reduction of 'systems loss'. When the company draws down power from the National Grid, it is charged according to a meter reading taken at the sub stations serving the company. For the first time, they are able to determine precisely how much electricity they are selling.

Speeding up the billing process identified a 20% discrepancy between what the electricity company was drawing down and what it was selling. Meter readers record their observations directly into the mobile payment system and have identified direct theft and broken cables. As a result, the 20% discrepancy has been reduced to 15%, allowing the company to recoup in excess of $780 ,000 (US) annually.

Some time ago, a cargo plane crashed in Los Angeles. The cause of the crash, it was quickly discovered, was due to a series of miscalculations concerning the weight of the baggage loaded on the plane. The load was unbalanced and the plane could not take off correctly, and plunged to the earth minutes after take-off. Previously, air cargo containers were put on a scale and the weight was written by hand on the outside of the can. Sloppy handwriting may have been one cause for the plane crash. A POS airport baggaging system was needed immediately.

A thermal printer that communicates directly with the cargo can's weigh scale was required. The printer prints a barcode, destination, date and container weight clearly and in large letters. The warehouse worker applies the label to the can where it can be read by airport personnel loading the can on the plane. The logistics corporation also chose a durable and inexpensive direct thermal media to withstand abrasions and scratches endured during transit.

Airport Security

In order to step up airline safety, in 2002 the US Congress passed a law stating that all checked baggage must be screened for explosives. This is a change from the random search of checked baggage at most airports. One way to fill this tall order is for airlines to put into action the practice of matching every bag that goes into the belly of a plane to a passenger on board.

The new process of bag-matching involves scanning tags on bags loaded onto planes, and comparing bag tags to passenger lists. If a passenger doesn't get on a flight , that traveller's bags will be removed. This is all done in an effort to prevent suspect luggage being checked onto a plane without the passenger actually being on the flight. Barcode printers are perfectly suited for this task.

Each of the airlines will require a system of printing and inventorying barcodes to keep up with these new standards and airport baggage pos systems are up to the challenge.

How does the power get from the power station to our business and homes? The answer has much to do with power transfomers and various kinds of pole line hardware, including high voltage insulators.

Power Transformers
Power goes from the power station to the sub station, which stations are situated in regular neighbourhoods. But by then the vo
tage is significantly reduced to be safer, although it's still at a very high level. This is handled by the use of distribution transformers and power transformers. Broadly, a power transformer has two sections: a primary coil and secondary coil. By means of the number of loops in the primary versus the number of loops in the secondary, the voltage is reduced. So if the primary has 50 loops in the coil and the secondary has 100 loops in it's coil - the voltage is halved. If that occurs again, and again - the voltage is brought down to a safe level. Since the heat produced in this process is considerable, the transformers are heavy duty. There also needs to be varying kinds of transformers, step up, step down, etc. All these come under the category of power transformers.

High Voltage Insulators
Those pylons that grace the countryside and utility poles that grace the streets convey the power from one place to another. But at the point of receiving the power and passing it onto the next pylon or utility pole, the power is generally still at a lethal level. Leakage is possible and insulation is required. The utility poles have high voltage insulators to assist with the power conveyance in a safe manner. The materials used are various - it might be high quality plastic or ceramic and may occupy several layers in case of deterioration of fracture.

Game of the friggin century.

It has been said of Deus Ex that every time someone mentions it; one of those listening will go and reinstall it. We've managed to attest to the truth of this since we are constantly installing and playing this little gem from way back in 2000. While only needing a paltry 300 MHz CPU to get the game running, this Unreal Engine-based action RPG game is quite possibly one of the best games to ever be created.

Released back when multiple story braches and solutions were mostly pipe-dreams, Deu
Ex took itself very seriously and delivered huge quantities of satisfaction for almost any player. It gave rise to a love affair with the game which saw players replaying the entire game in order to find alternate paths through certain sections.

While it all took place from a first person view, the range of options used to progress through levels were impressive then and still impress now. One could hack through security systems, negotiate with NPCs, take a very stealthy approach or even rage through the level with guns blazing. All would achieve the desired effect which was what made Deus Ex such a classic.

The storyline which put players in control of a cybernetically enhanced JC Denton was not to be sneezed at either. A player's cybernetic body could be enhanced further and upgraded, skill points could be assigned to various abilities and some weapons could also be modified. A character with a fully upgraded Rifle skill and a modded weapon is nigh-unstoppable from a distance.

In favor of the game was the length and depth of the storyline, the deep notes system that recorded the information gleaned during play and the dark dystopian setting that had folks traipsing around a garish Tokyo, brooding New York and various secret societies and institutes trying to find out what UNATCO is really up to. As old and dated as the engine is now, the game is still just as impressive as it ever was. It was worthy of near-perfect scores across the board when it was released and it just as worthy now, perhaps even more so since it has survived the test of time.

On top of this, the third installment of the Deus Ex series has been announced , the original is available on Steam and Eidos is offering the full game as a download with a one hour trial period on their website.
