It has been said of Deus Ex that every time someone mentions it; one of those listening will go and reinstall it. We've managed to attest to the truth of this since we are constantly installing and playing this little gem from way back in 2000. While only needing a paltry 300 MHz CPU to get the game running, this Unreal Engine-based action RPG game is quite possibly one of the best games to ever be created.

Released back when multiple story braches and solutions were mostly pipe-dreams, Deu
Ex took itself very seriously and delivered huge quantities of satisfaction for almost any player. It gave rise to a love affair with the game which saw players replaying the entire game in order to find alternate paths through certain sections.

While it all took place from a first person view, the range of options used to progress through levels were impressive then and still impress now. One could hack through security systems, negotiate with NPCs, take a very stealthy approach or even rage through the level with guns blazing. All would achieve the desired effect which was what made Deus Ex such a classic.

The storyline which put players in control of a cybernetically enhanced JC Denton was not to be sneezed at either. A player's cybernetic body could be enhanced further and upgraded, skill points could be assigned to various abilities and some weapons could also be modified. A character with a fully upgraded Rifle skill and a modded weapon is nigh-unstoppable from a distance.

In favor of the game was the length and depth of the storyline, the deep notes system that recorded the information gleaned during play and the dark dystopian setting that had folks traipsing around a garish Tokyo, brooding New York and various secret societies and institutes trying to find out what UNATCO is really up to. As old and dated as the engine is now, the game is still just as impressive as it ever was. It was worthy of near-perfect scores across the board when it was released and it just as worthy now, perhaps even more so since it has survived the test of time.

On top of this, the third installment of the Deus Ex series has been announced , the original is available on Steam and Eidos is offering the full game as a download with a one hour trial period on their website.

Crystal Reports is in our opinion one of the best industrial reporting tool, which has large number of report designers to do the job as well as Crystal Reports users, who are familiar with Crystal Report launching, sorting, grouping (expanding and collapsing, etc.).  

CR allows you to abstract from your ERP application (in our case SAP B1 and Dynamics GP formerly Great Plains) and built the report in pure SQL data selection (Microsoft SQL Server view or stored procedure on the SB1 or GP company DB level).  In this small p
blication we would like to share with your Crystal Reports design techniques:

 

1.       Dynamics GP and SAP BO table structures.  You can review complete structures in Dynamics GP SDK as well as in SAP Business One SDK.  However, if your report is simple and you expect to involve, say 5 tables or so, you can quickly find the table in Dynamics GP: Tools->Resource Description->Tables or in SBO: in Menu select show system information

 

2.       SQL Views and Stored Procs approach.  If you are new to Crystal Reports, you can try report wizard, however if you are looking for professional reporting, we recommend you to abstract reporting tool from its DB queries through SQL View or SQL Stored Procedure (where parameters are translated into CR parameters automatically).  In Dynamics GP Great Plains you can go ahead and create custom SQL objects in GP company database directly.  In SAP BO, however Early Watch service makes its policeman job and you do not want to place custom SQL objects into SB1 company or system databases, instead create new database (SB1Customization, for example) and place SQL View or Stored Procedure there.  In the case, when you have several companies in SAP Business One, you should consider using Exec statement in the stored procedure to build on the fly select statement with the company DB name, taken as parameter

 

3.       Consolidated reporting.  In Dynamics GP you have FRx Financial Reporting to build Balance Sheet and P&L statements with preset link to GP General Ledger tables.  SAP Business One is very comprehensive in exporting BS and PL statement into Excel worksheet.  We recommend you to consider FRx consolidated reporting if your business includes several subsidiaries , where you have mixture of Dynamics GP Great Plains and SAP Business One ERP and MRP applications.  In FRx you can build and deploy FRx reporting tree to analyze reports by branch or consolidated by the whole organization

Owners of the Apple iPhone will be able to lay out their music library in alphabetical divided sections, allowing them to sort their media by song, artist, album, videos, etc.  To move through the library, users will simply scroll through it by swiping their finger across the screen. 

Songs and ringtones are available for purchase and download through the iTunes store directly over the Wi-Fi option for those users with an iTunes subscription (not included in the package and available for an additional fee).  Other cellular data networks are not included.  Wallpapers, screen savers, and other graphics can also be downloaded at the user's discretion.

When used with a Wi-Fi network, the Apple iPhone is Internet capable, supporting fill web pages, but not Flash or Java.  User's zoom in and out of the pages by tapping the screen and they can access YouTube videos and Google's map service with a simple touch.  It supports e-mail with .PDF, Word, and Excel attachments and allows the user to view the attachments.  Text messaging and media messaging are also standard functions.

The Apple iPhone also includes a contact list, organizer, calendar, and alarm clock, all basic features of most cell phones.  It is Bluetooth ready but cannot support stereo audio headsets other than the one's that are included with the phone in its standard packaging.  The basic setup available includes a phone dock, computer cable, USB power adaptor, use documentation, and cleaning cloth. 

The battery, which is a rechargeable lithium ion battery, lasts for eight hours of talk time, seven hours of video time, and twenty-four hours of music playback.  Currently , the Apple iPhone is pricing at $399.00.  That price requires a two-year AT&T cell phone service contract.  User's may also purchase additional accessories if they so choose.

This is the first in a series of articles that give you proven techniques for speeding up your computer. In this article, we look at the hard drive, RAM, video cards, and installed programs. While all of these make a difference, the real diffence is you, and how you use your computer.

When looking to speed your computer, there are several things to look at, some are software related; others are hardware related.

The first thing we'll look at is the hard drive. A common question by users who want to speed up their comp
ter is: "Do I need I bigger hard drive? That's certainly a consideration, but before you shell out your hard-earned cash, let's do some diagnostic steps first.

The first step is to defrag the drive and see how that impacts the drive's performance.

A second step would be to look at how much data is stored on the drive. If there's too much information, this will cause your drive to slow down. Generally, I recommend that you only use only 50% of the drive for storage of files. Any more than that will begin to degrade the drive's performance.

A simple solution is to remove unnecessary programs. That alone will make a big difference in improving your computer's performance.

Another option is to install a second drive as a swap drive. This could be an IDE or SATA drive, or you may want to install a Flash drive. The only caveat to installing Flash drives is that they're still quite expensive. You can get a lot more bang for your buck using a platter style of drive.

But there are some diminishing returns. If you get a hard drive that runs at 10,000 RPM, you're likely to run into cooling issues. Likewise, if you get a fast laptop, it's likely to run hot and if you're in the habit of placing the laptop on your lap, you could get burned.

A case in point is my current laptop, the Asus M51n. I could have gotten a faster configuration, but it would have run considerably hotter, especially at the air port. According to the reports I read, I could run the risk of getting burned. As a result, I opted for the slower configuration.

RAM would be the next thing to consider. If you don't have enough it will definitely impact your computer's performance. But how do you determine how much is enough? It depends on your needs. If you work with office applications and surf the Web, 2GB of RAM is plenty.

If you're a hard core gamer or an artist working with high end computer graphics, you'll want a lot of RAM. 4GB is good and you'll want to make sure it's the fastest RAM that your machine will support. Not all RAM is created equal, so it's important to check that out first.

One last thing to look at is how many programs you have running at one time. If there are too many open, this will degrade system performance. Here, a simple fix is to close some programs to free up system resources.

Another issue is the video card. You want to buy a dedicated card with plenty of video RAM. A minimum amount would be 256 MB, but a better option would be 512 or even 1024 MB of RAM. If your video card supports OpenGL or if you can obtain hardware acceleration , that's even better.

For many years the evolution of storage devices has been continuously improving their quality.

 The market is in permanent competition and all the companies are always trying to be at the leading edge. The use of CD format, created in 1979, already supplanted the floppy-disc format for some time. The more common CD-ROM format can store 80minutes/700 MB.

Then the DVD format has become very popular, this is able to store much more data, in the more common single layer DVD you can store 4,7 GB, but  double level double l
yer DVD can store 17 GB.

Another very useful device is USB pen-drive, that now are largely spread worldwide. This kind of device has a very variable storage capacity, now USB pen-drive can store even 16GB but there are also some that can store 128 Gb. On the market you can find pen drive with a lot of shapes and colors, they are less  cumbersome than CD disc and they work faster in the data transfer process.

The latest news on storage devices is the creation of a new  kind of DVD, called high definition DVD (HD DVD) but especially of their direct competitor, Blu-ray disc or BD.

These two new formats guarantee to make video and audio quality more and more defined and detailed, to make the public live an even more realistic experience.

BD has a superior storage capacity. Thanks to a blue-colored laser, it is able to store up to 54 GB data, almost 12 times more than simple single layer DVD. This capacity seems huge, but discs encoded in MPEG-2 video typically limit content producers to around two hours of high-definition content on a single-layer BD-ROM. This required the creation of double layer discs (more than 50GB), but also new more sophisticated codec, such as MPEG-4.

In July 2008, have also been announced 400GB 16 layers Blu-ray discs, but they haven't been commercialized yet.

Today the fight has surely been won by BD, because in February 2008, Toshiba, owner of the rights on opponent format, announced that it would no longer develop, manufacture, or market HD DVD players and recorders, effectively ending the format war.

Sony's PlayStation 3 acted as a catalyst for Blu-ray Disc, as the PlayStation 3 used a Blu-ray Disc drive as its primary information storage medium, without the console, consumers should buy a specific BD player and probably also a new TV screen  that works in high definition to be able to see this kind of discs.

This is no doubts an obstacle for the mass spreading of this new technology, at least for the first years.

Although every movie production company already announced that they support the BD format and they already started releasing film using this format.

 A big doubt about this format is if it will be able to keep production costs low and so to keep also selling prices low for final consumers.

Until now it seems that discs' costs will be more or less the same than usual DVD. The real problem is that until now selling of BD players are much more lower than expected. This is because consumers think that common DVD quality is already good enough ,  the price of BD players is still too high and consumers don't perceive so overwhelming improvements in the video or audio quality to justify the purchase of this new device. And until now nobody can say they are wrong.

This article describes the components and layers of an ID card and the process of printing them.

A finished ID card is built up from:

•     A blank card
•     The printed image
•     An overcoat or lamination layer.

The printed image is created with the dye film ribbon. For color printing
, inside a dye-sublimation printer is a roll of transparent ribbon with a repeating series of Yellow (Y), Magenta (M), Cyan (C), Black (K), and Clea
(O) panels. The YMC panels contain thermally sensitive dyes; by combining varying amounts of these dyes, any color in the spectrum can be created, from white (no dye transferred) to Black (full transfer of each of the three dyes).

The Black and Clear panels are also used in this thermal printing process, but they operate in a different way called "Mass transfer" in which all of the material (In this case a plastic resin rather than a dye) is transferred once the carrier ribbon reaches the required transfer temperature. The black resin is used to apply dense black text and barcodes on top of the YMC color image, and the clear panel is used to put a protective overcoat over the entire printed image.

For extra protection, sometimes a lamination layer is added onto the card after printing. This is normally a 0.6 mil or 1 mil thick layer, which protects the card from scratching. Lamination is usually only required for high-wear usage such as cards that are swiped daily through access control readers.
