Does your image appear good on the screen, but looks blurred, jagged or fuzzy when you print it?

To clearly see the difference of the quality of image on screen and on print, take an image from the internet. Zoom it out or make it larger. Can you see how series of little squares appear on the image? Try to print it and you'll see that the color will fade. There will be a change in the resolution.

Resolution is, basically, the sharpness or crispness of an image. When an image is shrunk, the color looks lively. When
you blow it or enlarge it, the color will fade and the image will look unclear.

Resolution is defined as the number of pixels contained in the monitor. Pixel, from the words "picture element", is the basic unit of programmable color in a computer image. The resolution is measured by the number of dots per inch (dpi), which is equal to the numbers of squares of color in an inch. A standard resolution for an image should be 300dpi and 400dpi for images containing text.

The resolution of an image is inversely proportional to the size of the image. In other words, when you increase the size of the image the resolution decreases, and vice versa. For example, if you enlarge an image, the size, of course, increases. But the quality or sharpness of the image decreases, giving you a blurred image.

When you extract images from the internet, most probably, you will have a poor quality image. Internet images are mostly saved in GIF or JPEG file format, which only consumes 72dpi. The purpose of saving image files on this resolution is to make the image easy to extract. Meaning, these images are not for print use.

Scanners, digital camera, computer monitor and other display devices use the RGB (red, green, blue) color mode, while in the printing process CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) color mode is used. Meaning, you have to expect change in the color of the image when you print it. To reduce the problem, you must convert your image from RGB to CMYK. There are image editing programs that offer color conversion, such as Photoshop or Corel PhotoPaint.

Do not expect to get good images from the internet. You must resort to other sources like real photos or pictures from magazines. When you scan, compare the size of the photo to the size of your layout. If the photo is larger than your layout, scanning at 300dpi is enough. If it is smaller, adjust your scanner's resolution setting and percentage size. If there are texts over the image, lighten the image so the text will be readable. If you do not know how create good prints, you can resort to a printing press.

To pass the CCNA exam and excel in today's networks, you must know how to work with the Cisco config register and recover from a lost password.  Learn how from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.

Whether you're preparing for the CCNA certification exam or not, you must be prepared for the following question:

"Hey, I reloaded this router and it wants an enable password.  Do you know it?"

Because if you don't, and there's no one available who does, you need to perform a passwor
recovery technique on the router - without erasing the current configuration.   This involves manipulating the config register, and a misstep here can be fatal to the router's chances of recovery!

Obviously, that can make you pretty nervous about changing the config register, CCNA or not.  Different Cisco routers and switches have different techniques for password recovery, so the following discussion is limited to the 2500 series.  If you need to do this for another model, do a quick search engine check for "password recovery cisco" and you should quickly find a document for the Cisco router you're working with.

For the 2500 series, you start by reloading the router and sending a BREAK signal during the first 60 seconds of the reload.  Depending on the terminal program you're using, this can be the hardest part of the entire process!  For most, just press during this one-minute period.  If this doesn't work, you may need to check Help in your terminal program to find out how to send this break signal.

As a result of the break sequence, the router will go into ROM Monitor mode.  The commands here are totally different than the ones you're used to working with in the router's IOS.  Use the command o/r 0x2142 to change the config register setting, and reload the router by entering the letter "i".  

This config register setting doesn't erase anything, but it does make the router ignore the contents of NVRAM.  This means that you'll be prompted to go into the dreaded Setup Mode, which you do NOT want to do.  Simply press "N" and type "enable" when you're at the router prompt. (If you do go into Setup Mode, you can always get out with , a handy command to know for the CCNA exam and for real life, as you can see!)

Be very careful with the next step.  You want to enter the command "configure memory" or "copy start run" at this point - don't enter "write memory" or "copy run start".  Success on the CCNA exam and in working with real-world networks is all about the details, and this is a very important detail.

At this point, you can look at the running configuration and see the passwords, and change them if you wish.  However, we're not done.  The config register needs to be set back to its default of 0x2102, and you do so with the global command "config-register 0x2102".  Now you want to save your config with "write memory" or "copy run start", and reload the router.   The router will now boot as it normally would.

Knowing how to recover from a lost password is a vital skill for both the Cisco CCNA certification exam and for success in real-world networks.   It's not something we have to do every day, but when the time calls for it, we have to do it correctly and completely - and that includes that final config-register change!

Part of earning your CCNA and CCNP - especially passing the difficult CIT exam - is becoming a master network troubleshooter.  Today, we'll take a look at troubleshooting EIGRP and spotting common errors.

Most adjacency issues are easily resolved - mistyped IP address, bad wildcard mask in the neighbor statement, mistyped EIGRP
S number, and so forth. You know the AS number has to match, but always double-check that. Next, check the wildcard mask to make sure the correct interfaces are EIGRP-enabled. In the following example, we've configured three loopbacks on R2 and want to advertise all three loopbacks via EIGRP, but R4 only sees one.

R2(config)#int loopback1

R2(config-if)#ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0

R2(config-if)#int loopback2

R2(config-if)#ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0

R2(config-if)#int loopback3

We know it's not an adjacency issue, because R4 has to have an adjacency to get the route. Perhaps the config on R2 is the problem.

R2(config-router)#network 172.12.23.0 0.0.0.255

The only one of the three networks that matches that network statement is 10.1.1.0 /24.  As a result, the networks 10.1.2.0 /24 and 10.1.3.0 /24 will not be advertised.

We could use a network statement with 10.1.0.0 0.0.255.255 to successfully advertise the loopbacks, but by breaking the three networks down into binary, we can see that the three networks have the first 22 bits in common. Therefore, a better wildcard mask to use is 0.0.3.255.

R2(config-router)#no network 10.1.1.0 0.0.0.255

R2(config-router)#network 10.1.0.0 0.0.3.255

Another factor that must match between potential EIGRP neighbors is the K-metrics, or metric weights. Let's change the EIGRP metric weights on R2 and watch the effect on its adjacency with R4.

Ever scheduled an event like a teleseminar or product launch? Hopefully
they'll copy down all the details correctly, adjust the time to match their
time zone, AND actually remember to attend. Luckily there's an easy way to
do all this by marking your visitor's calendar with just a couple of clicks
using Microsoft Outlook.

This works because programs like Outlook can read different types of files.
The file we're going to be creating is called a vCalendar file -- be aware
this wil
only work if your visitor has Outlook 97 and above (Outlook
Express is no good here).

What we'll be doing here is creating the event on our computer in the form
of an appointment on the Outlook calendar. Then, we'll export it to a file
our visitors can click on, and when they do, it'll import all the info about
the meeting right into their Outlook calendar.

Let's get started. Open Outlook, go to your calendar and find the correct
date, and double click.

Type in a subject, this will be your event's title. For the location put in
something like the URL if this is an Internet thing or a phone number with a
passcode if this is a phone-based teleseminar.

Then choose a start time and end time, in your time zone. The COOL thing
about this is when the user adds this appointment, it will appear adjusted
to their own time zone.

Then in the body type in any other details the user needs to know about your
event. That's all you need to set, things like the reminder time won't
export so don't bother setting it. Any formatting you do (setting fonts,
making things bold or colorized, etc.) will not save either.

Go to File -> Save As, then where it says "Save As Type" choose "vCalendar
Format (*.vcs)". Save this to your desktop as something like: event.vcs

Then in your .htaccess file, put this in:

AddType text/x-vCalendar .vcs

If you do not have an .htaccess file, put this text in a new text document
(in Notepad), then save as ".htaccess" (with the dot in front) and upload
into the same folder your .vcs file is going.

(That part with adding the .htaccess file *shouldn't* be necessary, we're
just being cautious by adding that in.)

Now upload your event.vcs file. Link to it from an HTML file, and tell
people that if they have Outlook 97 or higher, all they have to do is click
that link, then click "Open" and the event or yours (whatever it is) will be
added to their calendar.

Since the event is adjusted for the person's time zone, there's no guessing
whether or not 6 PM your time means 7 PM or 10 AM their time. In most cases
an alert will appear on their screen 15 minutes before the event starts, so
if you have a teleseminar they'll remember to call in and won't be late.

What's more, a lot of PDAs (Palm Pilots and some cell phones) have Outlook
integration so YOUR meeting could also be copied to their personal
organizer.

This kind of scanner yields 16.7 million colors. To scanner techies, that means 256 x 256 x 256 red, green and blue dot combinations. These days, almost all the scanners available have at least 24-bit capability.

For more colors, and flexibility in adjusting the brightness and contrast, scanners with a bit depth of 30, 36, 48 and more are the equipment you'll need. However, you will spend more money with these things as they are more expensive than the 24-bit scanners.

Resolution/DPI is measured in dots per inch (dpi). The dpi tells you how many spots of information are there in a given area. This relates to the grid of pixels used to represent your images. The higher the dpi, the finer the grid of pixels--- resulting to a more detailed image.

If you're going to send the file via email, you have to scan at 150 dpi, or even less. For print output, anywhere from 200 to 300 is appropriate. If you plan to resize your image, a higher dpi will provide you with more detail and clarity.

Another jargon usually associated with dpi is 'interpolated'. This means that the scanner software is creating extra pixels in between the ones that are scanned.

Negatives- One feature that is useful later on is the scanner's ability to scan negatives and/or slides. Negatives contain more detail than prints. For great results, you can scan them at 3000 dpi and then enlarge after. However, this kind of scanner is a bit expensive. In addition, you will also need to invest in specialized software to manage the scans.

Speed- Scanners often show speed in seconds per page for both color and black-and-white. The speed depends on factors such as the type of computer, the dpi setting, and the material/image you are scanning. The average specification for a good scanner would be 20 secs/page.

Software- Most scanners come in bundles that include the scanner itself and the software to manage the scanning operations. Like any other technological device, some bundles are better than others. You just need to look into the specifications that's right for you.

Interface- The interface between the computer and the scanner is often the USB on either Mac or PC. Exceptions are the ScSI or Firewire connectors.

Recovering from a hard disk crash can be a tedious and time consuming job. Having an image backup handy can eliminate all that hassle and have your computer up and running again in no time.

My friend Sharon called recently to ask for my email address.  Her hard drive crashed and she was in the process of rebuilding a new drive--application by application and, it would seem, one email address at a time.   Everything on her old drive was gone, including the photos from her recent vacation.  Unfortunately, the backups sh
had been doing so religiously every night contained nothing.

No one really expects a disk crash but drive failures do happen—and often at the most inconvenient times.  In addition to the possible loss of important data files, a disk crash can leave you with the daunting task of having to replace the dead drive and reinstall your operating system and all of your applications. While you're doing this—assuming you know how to do this, your computer remains nonfunctional. 

While this "rebuilding" time can range from mildly annoying to extremely aggravating for a home computer user, it can bring a computer-dependent small business, or even a large office, to a virtual standstill.  Whatever you use your computer for, having a quick and easy-to-restore backup can eliminate both the distress and the expense of the prolonged downtime normally associated with a hard drive failure.

When you're restoring from a drive failure, the best kind of backup to have is an image backup.  Most backup software products are designed to provide a way to backup and restore individual files.  There are, however, some backup software applications that make it possible to backup your entire drive.  A complete drive backup is called an image backup or image copy.  Some full-featured backup software products will provide both image backup and individual file backup.  They allow you to make an exact image copy of your drive and then supplement this with regular (daily, weekly, etc.) file backups.  This is useful because, while some files on your hard drive change frequently, many files hardly ever change and need to be updated only rarely if ever at all.

An image copy is a drive to drive copy. In order to create an image copy you must have a second drive to backup or copy to.  This can be a second internal drive but it is probably best to use an external drive, such as a USB or FireWire drive as your backup drive.  The nice thing about an external backup drive is its portability.  You can easily carry it home or lock it up each night.  You can remove it and take it with you in case of an imminent disaster, such as a hurricane or flood.  The one essential feature of your backup drive is that it must be as large as or larger than your source drive. Your source drive is usually your internal C:\ drive but it could be any drive you want to backup.

An important issue to consider when transferring an image copy to your backup drive is whether the data will be compressed or encrypted.  While compression and encryption are useful tools, they can introduce the possibility of data corruption and this danger is magnified when dealing with such a large data transfer.  There are, unfortunately, a great many reported cases of users who, like my friend Sharon, realized too late that their "backups" were nothing more than empty folders or that their backup data was corrupted beyond repair.  When choosing any backup software, but particularly an image backup software, be sure that there is a way to verify the contents of the backup to ensure that your backup files contain good, usable, restorable data.

Restoring from an image backup eliminates all the work and time normally associated with rebuilding a new drive.  When you restore the image backup to your new drive, not only all of your data files but all of your applications, your preferences, your latest hardware drivers and even your drive partitions are all transferred to your new drive.  If you are restoring a boot drive image, the new drive will be bootable as well.  The actual time involved in transferring the data to the new drive will depend on the size and speed of the drives.

The only other issue to consider when restoring an image backup is the drive partition size.  When you transfer an image of one drive to another, the drive receiving the image will create a partition to contain it.  This drive partition will be exactly the size of the old drive.  If, for example, you make an image copy of a 120 GB drive on a 200 GB drive, the 200 GB drive will contain a 120 GB active partition and 80 GB of unusable space.  If you wish to gain access to the unused 80 GB, you will need to expand the 120 GB partition.  This will require a partition expansion utility.  Some backup and drive copy software programs include a partition expansion utility. 

How do you know if you really need an image backup?  Consider how much you value your data, how much time (and money, if you have to pay someone else  to do it) it will take to rebuild a new drive if yours fails and how inconvenienced you will be until your computer is up and running again.  With external backup drives becoming increasingly affordable, even home computer users can now enjoy the security that drive to drive backup software can provide.
