It's a sad fact that bullies will use many ways to get at their victims and internet give them yet another method. We call them cyberbullies, this people use internet to try to hurt or embarrass another person.

Today's young Internet users have created an interactive world away from adult knowledge and supervision. Because bullies tend to harass their victims away from the adults, the Internet is the perfect tool for reaching their victims. This means that home is no longer a sanctuary for kids.

How to stop the
yberbully

1. Document action from the cyberbully. Take a screen-shot of your screen if you experience cyberbullies. Press PrintScreen/SysRQ on your keyboard, open a new word document and select Past from the edit menu. Make a note of the date, location, email address and name (nickname) and save the document.

2. Stop and block all contact with the bully; do not "fight back." If you can identify the cyberbully, block anyfurther communications. In your instant message program go to People or Friends in the main menu and choose Block User or Remove Friend. In your email program, add the offending email address to your blacklist. You can block websites by edit the hosts file on your computer.

3. Contact the school and tell them the story. Add the bully's nickname to an online database ( e.g. http://www.byllydb.com ). In the worst case scenario, a lawyer can help you consider filing a civil suit against bullies and/or their parents for defamation.

How can parents prevent and protect

1. Talk to your children about online activities they are involved in.

2. Inform your children about cyberbullying.

3. Keep the computer in a viewable place such as a family room or kitchen.

4. If you feel it is warranted, install parental software. Explain for your children why you have installed the software and inform them about its functions (e.g. http://www.zamzom.com ).
